Cyclone Tracy was first detected as a depression on the Arafura Sea on 20
December 1974. It slowly moved southwest and intensified, passing close to
Bathurst Island on the 23rd and 24th of December 1974. It then quickly turned east-south ward, and headed towards Darwin, hitting the city early on Christmas Day. The eye of Cyclone Tracy passed over Darwin between midnight and 7:00am on Christmas morning. There was torrential rainfall and gusts of 240 km/h winds.
